Challenge fundraiser ideas

Organising your own fundraising challenge is a fantastic way to raise money to support people living with visible difference.

Our fundraisers usually take on an active challenge such as a run, walk, cycle or trek to test themselves. However, if you have another activity in mind then that’s great too – we would love to hear all about it!

How do I find a challenge to do? Or can I create my own?

There are many different ways you can complete a challenge to raise vital funds for Changing Faces and help people with a visible difference.

Some of our fundraisers choose a pre-existing event. For example you can use the ‘Find a Race’ website to find a challenge event in your area that you can sign up to. You can also sign up to a platform such as MyRunning, where you can find a challenge event near you or of course you can create your own!

Other fundraisers simply choose to create their own challenge, and ask their friends and family for donations.

Why not take a look at some of our examples below to get an idea of what exciting challenge you can take on.

Challenge fundraising examples

  • Charlie, one of our fantastic young fundraisers, recently completed ‘Charlie’s Angel Challenge’ where he ran and cycled from his home in Chester-Le-Street to the Angel of the North – and back again! He won an award from BBC Radio Newcastle for his efforts for Changing Faces, and in 2024 earned the Prime Minister’s Point of Light award.
We are enormously proud of him and his recognition is very well deserved!
  • Rebecca, Emma & Adele completed the Dalai Lama Trek in aid of Changing Faces by trekking through the Himalayan mountains in Northern India. An incredible fundraising achievement combined with extraordinary experience!

Challenge fundraising how do I get started?

If you would like to complete a challenge for Changing Faces, just get in touch by emailing [email protected] and we can support you.

Once you’ve planned out what you are going to do, we suggest setting up a JustGiving page to kick start your challenge fundraising. To make the most of your fundraising, make sure you:

  • Set a target (you can always increase if you reach it quicker than expected!)
  • Tell your story. Explain the fundraiser/challenge you’re undertaking and why Changing Faces is important to you
  • Share your page link on social media and by email
  • Ask your most generous sponsors/contacts to donate first. Others haven’t always decided how much to donate when they open your page and might base their donation on what other people have given
  • Ask for donations at the end of the month. People may be feeling a little more generous if pay day has just passed!
  • Raise your target if it’s close to being met

How will the money I raise make a difference?

There are currently an estimated 1.3m children and adults living with a visible difference in the UK and they face multiple challenges. They are vulnerable to isolation, loneliness, social anxiety and low self-esteem. They face staring, harassment, bullying and hate crime.

Many people with a visible difference face multiple levels of discrimination every day and our survey showed that shockingly, 50% said they felt self-conscious or embarrassed about their visible difference and 49% had experienced hostile behaviour. Read more about the impact on people’s lives.

We’re here to support people affected by visible difference to live the life they choose and free from discrimination. The money you raise can make this possible by providing the confidence, support and the opportunity to thousands of people with a visible difference.
