[email protected] online tool supports adults with visible differences through eight self-guided sessions which can be accessed from home.
[email protected] is a self-guided, online tool for adults (18 years or over) living with a visible difference or disfigurement in the UK.
It contains eight user-friendly sessions designed to help you learn new skills, as well as providing useful tips to feel more confident about the way you look. It is available any time from the comfort of your own home.
At the beginning of the programme I was feeling low, depressed and very anxious which made it hard for me to concentrate. I now feel very different. FaceIT has helped me to realise why I felt so anxious.
Each of the eight sessions offers support and advice to help you with some of the challenges of having a visible difference or disfigurement. Sessions usually take around 45 to 60 minutes to complete. To use our online tool, all you need is a computer and access to the internet.
[email protected] mainly uses a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approach. It helps you to test out situations, like going out in public or responding to people who stare or ask questions about your appearance and practise how to manage these. You will also have access to your own personal journal to record your feelings, experiences and progress.
FaceIT has been designed by experts in the field of appearance psychology and people with a range of conditions that affect appearance who understand the types of worries and problems you might be experiencing.
Sometimes I feel very confident and I can deal with the negative aspects, like being looked at or asked questions, but sometimes I can’t deal with it and I become quite depressed and feel helpless. The programme has given me tools to use when I feel down, which make me more able to help myself rather than allowing situations to overwhelm me.
It was good for someone like me who has, like, kind of major issues, so if you struggle to leave the house I think it’s a good place to start.
