FaceIT@home – an online support tool for adults with a visible difference

FaceIT@home is a self-guided, online tool for adults (18 years or over) in the UK. It contains eight user-friendly sessions designed to help you learn new skills, as well as providing useful tips to feel more confident about the way you look. It is available anytime from the comfort of your own home.

At the beginning of the program I was feeling low, depressed and very anxious which made it hard for me to concentrate. I now feel very different. FaceIT has helped me to realise why I felt so anxious. Beatrice

About the programme

Each of the eight sessions offers support and advice to help you with some of the challenges of having a visible difference. Sessions usually take around 45 – 60 minutes to complete. All you need is a computer or tablet and access to the internet.

FaceIT@home mainly uses a CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) approach. It helps you to test out situations (like going out in public or responding to people who stare or ask questions about your appearance) and practice how to manage these. You will also have access to your own personal journal to record your feelings, experiences and progress.

FaceIT has been designed by experts in the field of appearance psychology and people with a range of conditions that affect appearance who understand the types of worries and problems you might be experiencing.

Sometimes I feel very confident and I can deal with the negative aspects, like being looked at or asked questions, but sometimes I can’t deal with it and I become quite depressed and feel helpless. The program has given me tools to use when I feel down, which make me more able to help myself rather than allowing situations to overwhelm me. Alice

What are the benefits?

    • FaceIT@home is particularly useful for people who struggle to go out or those who don’t want to talk about their worries one-to-one.
    • FaceIT@home helps you to learn to deal with situations that you find upsetting or uncomfortable, by enabling you to try different techniques in the safety of your own home, before putting them into practice for real.
    • FaceIT@home helps you to cope with difficult feelings, builds confidence and supports you to feel more at ease with things such as meeting new people, being out with friends, going to the shops, playing sport, or going to work.

I mean it was good for someone like me who has, like, kind of major issues, so if you struggle to leave the house I think it’s a good place to start. Jenny
