Learn to love yourself through dance

Dylan has always enjoyed dancing and the freedom it gives him to express himself. Here he talks about how you can learn to love yourself through dance.

I’m Dylan and I have always loved to dance everywhere I go. When I hear music, I just can’t help moving to the beat! I get so much excitement and joy when I’m dancing, and it’s great seeing other people enjoying it too.

I wanted to build on my love of dance by joining a club, but it was difficult to find one that was accessible for people with disabilities. I have a rare condition called MDP Syndrome, which means I need extra support to do certain activities. However, my mum did end up finding a dance group that does classes for people with disabilities called Independence.

Dancing has boosted my confidence as a person and helped me realise how beautiful I am. Learn to love yourself through dance, and every time you hear music, you’ll feel confident!

Being able to express how I am feeling through dance and using movement to give life to my emotions has been amazing. I’ve also had the opportunity to meet new people, see new places and create unique and wonderful dance pieces.

Dance gives Dylan joy and confidence

Sometimes people think that you have to look a certain way to do performance activities like dance, but that isn’t true. As long as you have a passion for something, you can take to the stage and do it. Don’t let society’s barriers hold you back – be the change.

I was the first person with a disability and visible difference to join the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland. It was incredible taking on such a big challenge. The company put in the support that I needed for me to perform my best. I hope more dance groups and companies see the beauty of diversity and enable more people like me to get involved.

Social media has also let me explore my love of dance. I post dance videos on TikTok and Instagram and receive so many lovely comments. It makes me especially happy when people duet the dance back to me. I do lots of dances in my room and other places that are special to me. If you’re not part of a dance group, don’t let that stop you from showing everyone your moves! You can perform anywhere, and social media will give you your stage.

My mum said that I have always been beautiful, but once I started to dance, I believed that I was too. Always embrace your passions, because they are what give you confidence to be yourself. Everyone can shine when they’re doing something they love, so don’t let society tell you that you can’t.
