For many children with visible differences, it’s rare to find a toy that looks like them in mainstream shops. This lack of representation can increase the sense of isolation that they feel.
However, supermarket chain, Aldi recently stepped up to the representation plate and launched a range of dolls that include various visible differences and disabilities. From vitiligo and birthmarks to cochlear implants, it’s amazing to see a well-known brand recognise the importance of diversity in toys.
Our campaigner Hannah, who has a birthmark, said:
“As soon as I saw that Aldi was selling a birthmark doll, I knew I had to try and get one. I haven’t managed to find one yet, but my pastoral support teacher at college surprised me with the vitiligo doll, which was so lovely. The birthmark dolls all seem to be sold out near me, which goes to show just how important seeing yourself reflected in a toy is for people with visible differences. I have quite a few people looking for me so I’m hoping that I’ll get one soon!
“When I was younger, I got a birthmark bear for Christmas, which I love very much, so this new doll range is going to be amazing for all the kids (and adults) in the visible difference community.”
We hope that the popularity of these dolls shows other brands that there is a huge appetite for diversity out there.
The more we see people with visible differences represented across the board, whether through marketing, the performing arts or products such as toys, the more accepting society will become.
