How does it work?
Camouflage creams can significantly reduce the appearance of marks, scars and skin discoloration whilst provide effective, long-lasting, waterproof cover. They can be used to cover a wide number of conditions, including:
What will happen at an appointment?
At first your skin camouflage volunteer will ask how they can help you even if they have a doctor’s letter or notes.
They will tell you about the specially formulated creams, which although applied lightly, have a far better covering than ordinary makeup. The creams and powders are usually available on prescription but this is at the discretion of your doctor.
They will explain about the colour matching process and will try small amounts of cream until you have a match you are happy with. After this they will apply the cream to a larger area and make it waterproof with powder.
Throughout this time your volunteer will explain what they are doing and you will be able to look in a mirror to watch the process.
You will then be able to have a go at applying the cover yourself.
When you are happy with the outcome, your volunteer will write out a prescription form for you to take to your doctor and give you an information sheet which they will go through with you so that you remember how to apply the cream. This sheet will also contain the colours of the prescribed creams plus more details of how to get creams and a phone number for any queries.
What skills and training do our volunteers have?
All our volunteers receive a comprehensive five-day training course, updated annually, and are provided with a full range of camouflage creams and relevant equipment. They are good at putting people at ease and have a good understanding of the differing physical and emotional needs of service users.
How much does it cost?
The service is provided free of charge and we welcome donations. Camouflage creams are available on prescription and last between six months and two years, depending on the area to be camouflaged and the frequency of use. If you currently pay for prescriptions then you will have to pay a prescripton charge for the creams.
