Negative portrayals of disfigurement can influence how people think about disfigurement.
All too often the language and imagery around disfigurement is of sad lives 'blighted' by disfigurement, and words like 'horror', 'ugliness' and 'monstrosity' are used to describe the disfiguring condition or people involved.
What you can do:
- Download our campaign pack which contains important information for media professionals
- Sign up to our Voluntary Code of Practice which contains guidelines for journalists and editors on fairer portrayals of disfigurement in the media and keep these in mind when you are writing a story and making a programme or film.
