Criticism of new Channel 4 documentary series

There has been some recent media coverage and comment on a proposed series for Channel 4. You can read one of the stories here. Some of the comments have included:

  • The idea that a negative comparison is being made between an “attractive” person and someone with a disfigurement which is reflected in the title: “Beauty and the Beast.”

  • That it has the potential to be exploitative and voyeuristic.

Our view is as follows:

The working title “Beauty and the Beast”, which is being considered by Betty (the production company) and Channel 4, refers to the beast of prejudice - not to the people who have disfigurements. However, we have been in dialogue with Betty and Channel 4 about this title because people may take a literal view of this title and apply to those involved. A mindful use of titles is something that Changing Faces has been keen to address with broadcasters, as is stated in our Guidelines for Broadcasters.

We have been working closely with Betty and the documentary is still in the early production stages. The six part series aims to tackle prejudice in our looks-obsessed society and challenge people’s preconceptions of what constitutes beauty. Our understanding is that the programme is intended to challenge assumptions about appearance and prejudices about disfigurement. These are very important aims and we welcome a debate around them.

We are supportive of this series and are making sure that it is being made sensitively. We have been assured by Betty that there are psychologists involved throughout the production process to ensure the well being of the people involved in the series.

I agree with Laura. 'The phrase Beauty and the Beast' is an old cliche embedded in the English language - and the subconscious assumptions which are associated with those words is what will draw people in. Not a very good start, in my view. Even allowing for the good intentions the producers may intend with devloping a deeper interpretation of that phrase during the series, realistically it will go over a lot of people's heads. The programme seems like a good idea but this title has the potential to let it down.

The fact that the media have been so quick to assume that the 'beast' refers to the person with the disfigurement only goes to show that most people will take the title literally. Unless someone makes clear at the beginning of each and every programme that the 'beast' refers to prejudice, then audiences will continue to make that assumption. And even then, I question what kind of audience it will be attracting with that title. I can't help but think that the production company's main thought was 'we'll get a beautiful person and a deformed person living together in a house full of mirrors and see what happens!' and the 'it'll be educational....' was secondary. But I'm glad to hear that Changing Faces are involved so that at least someone will be trying to keep them on the 'educational' and 'sensitive' track.
