Approachable - display a warm manner if you meet someone with a disfigurement

Don’t know what to say when you meet someone with a disfigurement?

It’s simple, just treat them the same as anyone else. Maybe start with “Hello” and see where the conversation takes you from there. There’s no special or set conversation, just talk about the things you normally would: the weather, the price of petrol even how crowded the bus is!

“So what happened to you then?” shouldn't be the first question you ask. Wait until you know someone better or until they tell you themselves. If you still feel curious, maybe say something like “Do you mind if I ask you what happened?” But as with any personal question, be prepared for the fact they may not want to talk about it.

Express interest in something about them, as you would with anyone you meet. For example “I like that top, where did you get it?" Small talk can make a big difference.
