11-14 Face Equality Teaching Resources in Art, Drama and English

A series of two to four lessons in Art, English and Drama designed to promote positive attitudes and behaviours towards disfigurement with confidence. These are designed to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and equally regardless of facial appearance, resulting in a positive and inclusive school environment.

11-14 Personal Wellbeing – Puberty, Appearance and Difference

A series of two lessons which seek to teach students about the diversity of physical changes associated with puberty as well as physical changes associated with other events, such as accidents or illnesses. Through these resources students will consider their own appearance-related assumptions and the prejudices associated with looking different.

14-16 Science - Skin Colour and Vitiligo

The following resources aim to teach students about the role of melanocytes and melanin in skin colour and to provide an overview of the skin condition vitiligo. They are also designed to raise awareness of how people with visible differences may be treated in society.

16-18 Psychology – Reliability and Validity

The following resources are designed to assist the teaching of the potentially tricky concepts of reliability and validity, whilst raising awareness of disfigurement through the use of an attitude scale and an Implicit Attitude Test.

English - Notes on Benjamin Zephaniah's 'Face'

These notes will help teachers studying ‘Face’ to prepare for exploring appearance and difference. They will help students to distinguish between myth and reality and to challenge reactions to disfigurement.
